Human Rights Defender, Munther (Amirah) Al-Wara remains detained.

We are very worried about the detention and criminalisation of the Palestinian non-violent activist and Human Rights Defender Munther Al-Wara.

He is a Human Rights Defender recognised by Front Line Defenders and amnesty international. Furthermore he is a social worker and Head of the Board of the Popular Struggle Coordination Committee (PSCC). KURVE Wustrow has been working together with him and the PSCC since 2013.

What happened

The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) detained Munther Al-Wara in Bethlehem on the 27. of December 2017 during a demonstration. It was directed for the release of the 16 years old Women Human Rights Defender Ahed Tamimi, and her mother Nariman Tamimi, as well as against the US declaration that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.

Our Demands

We demand from the Israeli government and the military court, to immediately release Munther Al-Warra and all other (Women) Human Rights Defenders.

Further we demand a fair and transparent court hearing, according to Art. 6 of the Convention for the Safety of Human Rights and Basic Rights.

Our Appeal

Please support our demands and address the Israeli Embassy in your country.

You can also send a solidarity message to Munther Al-Wara:

Court Procedure until now

Though the military court on the 16th of January 2018 initially decided to release Munther Al-Wara on bail, the military court of appeal accepted the appeal of the prosecution and has remanded Munther Al-Wara in custody at the Offer military prison until the end of his hearing.

Prosecution

There are 13 charges against Munther Al-Warra, related to five demonstrations between the 01st of November and the 27th of December 2017 in which he participated, during which he is accused to have violated the public order.

Accusations

Furthermore he is being charged with allegedly having thrown stones and a burning projectile. The latter was a teargas canister, which the military had fired at the demonstrators, and he allegedly threw it back. That he apparently threw stones is based on the testimony of one soldier. This testimony, which was given when Munther Al-Wara was detained, some days after the alleged incident, does not coincide with the written report the same soldier made on the day of the alleged incident.

Outlook

The start of his court case was scheduled for the 21. of February, at Offer Military Court. But this was postponed to the 12 of March 2018, due to a change of judges,  during which the indictment will be presented.
