About the situation in Israel and Palestine

The images and news that have reached us from Israel since Saturday leave us without words. The extent and cruelty of the massive and targeted attacks by Hamas, especially on Israeli civilians, shock us deeply and cannot be justified by anything.

The retaliation announced by Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu means further suffering for civilians. Now the number of casualties is rising by the hour, especially in the Gaza Strip. The enclosed area is under a complete blockade – no supplies can come in and there is no possibility for civilians to escape from the Israeli air strikes. At the same time, the attacks of Hamas are ongoing and fighting is also reported from the border area with Lebanon.

Violence leads to more violence. Peace, freedom and security cannot be enforced by violence - neither for Palestine nor for Israel. The last few years have shown this very clearly time and again.

These days are a deep cut for the region and an unbelievable setback for all those on both sides of the green line who have been trying for years to keep spaces for understanding open and to preserve human rights - who are working towards a political solution to the conflict.

Our partners in the Civil Peace Service in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories have been working nonviolently for decades for these very peace perspectives: the observance of human rights, the expansion of women's rights, the dismantling of hatred and prejudice, the observance of international law.

We will continue to support the nonviolent efforts of these human rights defenders and peacemakers in Israel and Palestine.
